Code of Conduct

Seafaring is a profession that is very different from any other profession and demands inculcation of self-discipline and improvement in self-conduct.

BIMS is an institution that places utmost importance on punctuality, professionalism, responsibility and respect for each other in a conducive learning environment.

We have a duty to care for our students so that they feel safe and secure at all times. To facilitate a sense of responsibility and discipline amongst the students, a strict code of conduct is followed by BIMS to demonstrate exemplary behavior towards staff and clients.

Class Attendance:

Students must keep regular attendance at classes and practical sessions. Attendance not falling below 85% for theory classes and 100% for workshop practicals is mandatory to be eligible for appearing in exams.

Dress Code:

All students are required to wear appropriate dresses along the lines of instructions and regulations issued by the Academy.

Drug and Alcohol Policy:

In accordance with the current legislation in the shipping field, BIMS has an explicit Drug and Alcohol Policy. All students are required to strictly adhere to this policy at all times. Non-compliance will be viewed very severely by the management and could lead to expulsion.

Behavior Guidelines:

Anti-social behaviour such as causing excessive noise, abusive language, disobedience of orders, sexual harassment, aggressive attitudes and offensive personal habits are a strict no-no and will be strictly dealt with.

Ragging on campus is strictly prohibited. Strict disciplinary action is immediately taken if any incidence of ragging is reported and the guilty is likely to be dismissed from the Institute.

It is the duty of the students to protect the property of the Institute and prevent any damages that is likely to occur due to their behavior. The Institute reserves the right to recover from errant students the cost of damage inflicted on any Institute property besides taking other disciplinary action.

Visitors such as parents, guardians and friends of students are supposed to visit them only during specified visiting hours.

Hostel Accommodation:

Students should remain on campus at all times except at expressly exempted times such as Sundays. They are required to be proactive in the hostel community activities. Leaves can be granted only on a written request from parents.

Dealing with Breaches of the Code:

Breaches may be dealt with by:
  • informal warning;
  • formal warning;
  • dismissal.
