Standard Career Flow in Marine Industry

The work of ship seafarers can be broadly categorized into four basic departments:

Deck / Navigation Department which includes the captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers. The responsibilities of the Deck Department are:
  • To navigate the ship from one port to another port.
  • load and unload cargo / Embark and disembark passengers.
Engine Department which consists of the chief engineer, radio officer, electrical officer and junior engineers. The responsibilities of the Engine Department are:
  • To keep a watch on the running machineries
  • To maintain of all machineries on board the ship
Catering / Steward Department that manages the kitchen, laundry, medical and other allied services. The responsibilities of the Saloon / Catering Department are:
  • To provide food to all people on board the ship
  • To do housekeeping of the accommodation area
Other Departments that manage administrative, managerial or operational services.
